    Description

In the past, the online documentation gave examples on how to customize the RRDTool step and RRAs via the config.php file. It included setting for $config['rrd']['step'] and $config['rrd']['rra']. I had modified these settings to keep 5 minute intervals for 2 years. Everything is still working however i wanted to make a change and needed to refer to the examples. I can no-longer find any reference to these settings in the documentation... hopefully this isn't a sign of this feature being removed... Help

      Thanks!

          [OBS-2176] Online documentation missing info

This probably won't be documented by us, but there may be ways of handling this in the future that don't require documentation.

Sound great guys, thanks for you comments.

I found the notes in the defaults.inc.php helpful.

PS: Facts are pesky and inconvenient, alternative ones are far more satisfying.

I think perhaps having some "templates" for this might be useful in future.

There's not much chance of it being removed. It doesn't cause us any problems unless people start asking us how to make it work!

I don't foresee any issues, really. You clearly know what you're doing if you've been running with alternative facts settings for a long time now. We don't make the defaults longer because it will make the RRDs a lot larger, which adds up fast if you have a reasonable number of devices. If that's OK for you I don't see why not.

If adama feels we can document it publicly we sure can do that. It's just one of those things if someone fiddles with it that does know what he's doing, they could end up creating RRDs which contain 15 minutes of data and the rest averaged out for an entire week

Hmm now you guys are making me think twice..... Too much daytime coffee and evening beers maybe...
That said, i can't shake the feeling that it was there.

We like to make the change so historical data doesn't get skewed and washed out by daily averages(over a year). Our traffic is very bias to the typical school day and so very high during the day and very low during the evening. Also like to be able to drill down to a specific point in time and still have the granular data. It's been working well, albeit huge, since it was setup.

Being not "Strictly" supported, is there a possibility that we are going to run into any obvious issues?

I don't think we've ever had that in our documentation. Modifying it is not strictly supported, so that would be odd. Maybe you got info about it from our IRC channel or mailing list back then?

Yep positive. The documentation section had a config.php section that explained a bunch of items you were able to modify. It was much more sparse in explanation than it is now. RRA was included along with the Step. I wouldn't have known i could add them in the config.php or how to format the line properly otherwise This was some time in early 2015.

I just setup a new deployment and the setting still seem to work. Searched around a little and found them defined in the defaults.inc.php so i managed to look at that to adjust my config.php entries for my current retention requirements.

Are you sure these were documented by us? It's likely you were referring to the rrdtool documentation, I'm not sure we've ever had docs on how to do this.
